The ram-air static line progression course (RAPS) uses large, docile and manoeuverable square parachutes that can easily be steered to the dropzone landing area for a tip toe landing. Your first few jumps will be done using the traditional, ex-military, static line deployment system. This means that your parachute will be automatically deployed in the first few seconds that you fall away from the plane

You will do 5 static line jumps from an altitude of 3,500 feet, practising your stable spread freefall position and then rehearsing ripcord pulls with a dummy handle

Your instructor will carefully assess each of these jumps before clearing you to do your first freefall descent and deploy the parachute yourself. You will then, jump by jump, move onto longer freefall descents and gradually learn the complete range of basic freefall and safety manoeuvres that will enable you to skydive safely and confidently
